Podcast: Breaking Barriers: How Three EU Projects Are Redefining Energy Data Exchange

November 29, 2024

In a special episode of the EU Energy Projects Podcast, recorded during Enlit Europe in Milan, the teams behind EDDIE, DECODED, and TwinEU came together to address key challenges while laying the foundations for a truly connected European energy network. The projects are moving away from isolated efforts and towards open, collaborative development—creating shared tools and frameworks that can be reused and expanded by others.
Lauren Schmid (Youth Case Coordinator, EDDIE) and Lenas Staros (Project Coordinator, DECODED) discussed how their work aligns with Europe’s rapidly evolving policy environment, shaped by the Digitalisation of the Energy System Action Plan, reforms to the electricity market design, and the AI Act.

Their shared vision is to speed up the energy transition by ensuring that innovation flows freely between projects and sectors, dismantling barriers that prevent systems from working together, and embedding cooperation into every step of development. They believe that by combining expertise, sharing resources, and maintaining an open, interoperable foundation, Europe can create an energy ecosystem that is resilient, adaptable, and ready for future challenges.
TwinEU is at the forefront of developing a federated digital twin of the European electricity grid, connecting diverse national systems into a single, interoperable framework. By integrating data, models, and best practices across borders, TwinEU aims to enhance system operation, improve planning, and strengthen cyber resilience—supporting a smarter, more flexible energy system for Europe.

TP Aeolian Dynamics Ltd is honored to play an active role in this pioneering initiative, bringing its expertise to the development of a detailed digital model of Cyprus’s electricity network in close collaboration with the University of Cyprus. Their contribution not only strengthens the project’s technical foundations but also supports the long-term goal of building a more interconnected, efficient, and sustainable energy future for the region.
