First Review Meeting in Brussels: Building Momentum for TwinEU

September 19, 2025

The TwinEU project reached an important milestone with its first review meeting in Brussels, marking 18 months of progress and laying a strong foundation for the next reporting period.

Over this time, the partnership has achieved major results—chief among them the creation of a reference architecture for the federation of digital twins, the launch of the TwinEU Data Space Connector, and the rapid growth of one of the largest follower communities in the Horizon Europe family. These achievements are more than milestones: they are gateways to real impact across Europe’s energy system.

Reviewers’ insights played a crucial role in steering the conversation. Their questions challenged the consortium to demonstrate how the eight demonstration sites and their use cases clearly align with the project’s central mission and the EU’s Digitalisation of the Energy System Action Plan.

The meeting also highlighted the broader European policy context. As Svetoslav Mihaylov from DG CNECT explained, the European Commission is working towards the creation of a Digital Backbone—a framework that can orchestrate data flows across the energy system. With digital twins and energy data spaces at its core, this backbone will support better demand-supply management, unlock flexibility, and reinforce the security of supply.

From TPAD, Anastasis Polykarpou and Sotiris Shiakallis attended the review, contributing their expertise on work packages WP1, WP5, WP7, and WP10, in close collaboration with the KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence at UCY.

For TwinEU, this is not just about technology; it is about shaping the conditions for a more resilient and sustainable European grid. With strong foundations already in place, the partnership is entering its next phase with renewed confidence and ambition.
